Performance Upgrades & Tuning

Performance Upgrades

Are you planning a track day in your BMW? Or perhaps you just want
to get the best out of your car when you go for a spirited drive along your favourite piece of road? At Graham Martin Automotive we know BMW’s inside out and can tailor your car’s characteristics to suit your needs.

We can transform your handling with upgrades ranging from stiffer anti roll bars to minimise body roll in fast corners, to coil over suspension which can be combined with more aggressive wheel alignment and adjusted to your individual requirements.

Quaife

Do you have a powerful non M Power car and just can’t get traction out of corners with the standard open differential just spinning the inside wheel? We can supply and fit a limited slip differential as found in all the M cars giving you predictable traction and torque control between the rear wheels and crucially less intervention from the Dynamic Stability Control. .

The problem with standard cars…Today, standard BMW and Mercedes cars come from the factory equipped with an “open” differential. The problem with this type of diff is that when a wheel slips, it can only put through the amount of torque it takes to power that spinning wheel, i.e. very little. This results in almost a complete loss of drive to both wheels. Scenarios where this can frequently occur are cornering at high speeds, accelerating hard from low speeds or a stand-still, and accelerating in high powered vehicles. Driving in the rain and snow will naturally emphasise these issues, especially in rear wheel drive cars.

.

Furthermore, on modern cars (such as the E90 335i, E87 130i, E82 135i, etc) you will notice a little yellow light flashing up on your dashboard when you lose traction. All of the latest BMWs come equipped with various electronic systems designed for stability and safety. The DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), for example, applies wheel braking via the engine management system when it detects a loss of traction. As a consequence BMWs with more power, such as the 335i and 135i (or upgraded BMWs), suffer even more from this interference since these systems will cut engine power in an attempt to restore traction.

.

The Quaife solution…

.

As a direct replacement for the standard factory open differential, the Quaife ATB limited slip diff unit completely transforms the performance of your car. It is designed to prevent the complete loss of drive that occurs with an open differential when one wheel slips. The unique Quaife ATB uses sets of floating helical cut gear pinions that run in pockets and mesh during normal driving. Should one of the driven wheels start to spin however, the helical gears start to generate a torque bias thanks to the axial and radial thrust of the helical gear pinions in their pockets. The result is a progressive transfer of torque away from the spinning side of the axle to the driven wheel, which is now capable of transmitting a greater proportion of torque. It is progressive in action but never locks, and controlled power is transmitted to both the driving wheels.

.

The difference in performance this makes to BMW and Mercedes cars is remarkable, and has been exploited by thousands of customers and racing firms around the world. It is absolutely the perfect solution for road-use cars.
